GREENVILLE, PITT COUNTY - Norman Shackley was arrested Wednesday night and charged with vandalizing his former attorney's cars over the holiday weekend.
Attorney David Sutton said he woke up Saturday morning and found three of his vehicles had been tampered with.
"My wife walked outside and noticed that all three cars had two flat tires each, the stems were cut off, the tags were stolen and the cars were vandalized," Sutton said.
But that wasn't all.
"One of the vehicles had, we found out later, had transmission fluid poured down the tank, the gas tank and all through the defrost vent," Sutton said.
Authorities searched the area and found two empty Kangaroo brand transmission fluid bottles in Sutton's next-door neighbor's yard.
Five days later, deputies arrested Norman Shackley and charged him with breaking into a vehicle, 3 counts of injury to personal property and 3 counts of misdemeanor larceny.
Deputies said Shackley was seen on surveillance video purchasing transmission fluid from a Kangaroo gas station, roughly 6 hours before Sutton discovered the damage.
Sutton said the incident has taken a toll on his family.
"We have moved out of the house and are living where we can't tell anybody," he said.
Earlier this year, Shackley faced charges of vandalizing The Bicycle Post where he worked and impersonating a law enforcement officer at a storage facility off Arlington Boulevard.
Sutton was his attorney during that time.
"He paid me with guns that he had. And he's taken the position that, he had no money, that he wasn't treated fairly with regard to fees," Sutton said.
Sutton was issued a no contact order from a judge, meaning Shackley is not allowed to contact him or his family. But Sutton is worried that isn't enough.
"He's a dangerous person …and unfortunately, when you do what I do, occasionally you represent people who are that way," he said.
NewsChannel 12 tried to talk to Shackley at his home about the charges against him. We were told he did not want to comment at this time.
He is due back in court in January.
