GREENVILLE, PITT COUNTY - The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina in Greenville relocated to Union Street.
The Greenville branch moved from its West 9th Street location after 14 years. Food bank officials said they had to move because of the 10th street extension project. The old food bank building is in the right away of the DOT project.
"As you can see we're still a work in progress. We started moving our product and things in this past week," operations supervisor Robert Speight said.
Some people may be concerned with the branch leaving downtown, but Speight said there's nothing to worry about.
"We are spreading word throughout the community so that people who used to come to us [downtown] can go directly to different agencies," Speight said.
According to Speight, the group hasn't missed a single shopping appointment or delivery since they moved into the new space.
"Missing a delivery would have affected 300 to 400 families that were already planning to be at that food distribution," he said.
Speight said everyone is adjusting to the new location.
"While we're outside the center of Greenville for our agencies to come in for their re-supplying of their food pantries, soup kitchens and programs, the agencies actually find this location to be equally if not more convenient than our West 9th Street location," he said.
The Greenville food bank said they will continue to help walk-in's in their new location with emergency kits of food.
Last year, the branch distributed more than 8 million pounds of food.
The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina at Greenville serves Carteret, Craven, Greene, Jones, Lenoir, Onslow, Pamlico and Pitt counties. Two counties served are shared with the Raleigh Branch: Edgecombe and Wilson counties.
