HAVELOCK, CRAVEN COUNTY - The Havelock High School community is mourning the death of a teacher who collapsed on the job and later died.
Amanda Lawrence, 33, had a seizure on March 22nd, according to her family. She was in a copy room when the incident occurred, her mother, Mitsy Taylor, said.
The math teacher died at a New Bern hospital, according to a statement from Craven County Schools. "She will be greatly missed," the district said of Lawrence. She had been a staff member at the school since 2002, the statement said.
Additional counselors will be on site at the school Monday to provide support for staff and students.
Students are grieving the loss in different ways. Ashley Buffa wrote a song for her late teacher. "Her laugh echoes in my mind," Buffa sang in the song, which she posted to YouTube. "You were so young and beautiful," the song continued.
Lawrence's family members heard the song, which they appreciated. "It really makes you feel good in your heart that they think that much of her," Lawrence's father, Walter Taylor, said.
Visitation was held Thursday night from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home in La Grange, Lawrence's mother said. Lawrence's funeral service will be Friday at 2:00 p.m., also at Rouse Funeral Home.
