Fundraiser set for man shot while helping neighbor in Carteret County

BEAUFORT, CARTERET COUNTY - A fundraiser has been set up for a Carteret County man who was shot when he tried to help a neighbor allegedly being pursued by a gunman on Halloween night.

The  fundraiser for McArthur "Mac" Wright is scheduled to take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at The Backstreet Pub, located at 124 Middle Lane in Beaufort.

Those who donate $20 will receive live music, barbeque, dessert, and a sampling of ciders and seasonal beers, according to the fundraiser's Facebook page.

Attendees can also bid on art, gift certificates, plants and other items. All proceeds will go to Wright and his family, event organizers said.

The goal of the fundraiser is to help Wright with his recovery after he was shot on Oct. 31 at his home. Wright has since been released from the hospital.

Wright  is well-known as a mail carrier to many business owners in Beaufort. Susan Johnson said Wright has been her mail carrier for many years. She said although Wright is going through a difficult time, his attitude hasn't changed.

"He's just so upbeat and smiling. When I saw him this past weekend, he was still like that- arm in a sling, still pellets in his chest, but still upbeat," Johnson said.

Anita Ferguson works with Wright at the post office and is covering his route while he's out.

"I've been picking up stuff, people have been mailing him cards. A fundraiser for this, I think it's just super," Ferguson said.

Wright was shot on Halloween night while letting his neighbor, Susan Zimmerman Salazar, into his house on Rutledge Avenue in Beaufort. According to police, Salazar was being pursued by her brother, Arthur Freeman Page Jr., who wanted to shoot her with a shotgun.

As Wright opened his front door, Page fired a shot, hitting Wright in the shoulder, said investigators. Despite the injury, Wright was able to make it to a neighbor's house, where he called for help.

Two officers eventually shot and killed Page as he was loading his shotgun to shoot his sister, police said.

The district attorney announced Thursday that the officers involved in the shooting were justified in using lethal force.
