Deputies have made an arrest in the shooting death of a Greene County man last month.

Greene County Sheriff Lemmie Smith said Monday that 17-year-old Derajay Speede (pictured left), of Goldsboro, has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of Linwood Jones (right).

Jones, 49, was found dead at a home on 7th Street in Hookerton on April 24, deputies said.

Sheriff Smith said two males got into an altercation with Jones at his home, then chased him and shot him in the back. Jones made it to his cousin-in-law's porch, where he collapsed and died.

Jones leaves behind a 5-year-old son, according to family.

Speede is being held in the Greene County Jail under no bond. Sheriff Smith said the investigation is still ongoing.

Deputies said they are searching for two suspects involved in a shooting that killed a Greene County man Thursday night.

Linwood Jones (pictured), 49, was killed in the shooting in Hookerton at about 9:45 p.m. Thursday, said Greene County Sheriff Lemmie Smith.

According to Jones' cousin-in-law, Swindell Flowers, Jones was at Flowers' home on North 7th Street watching a basketball game. Jones then went back to his own residence on William Hooker Drive.

Sheriff Smith said Jones was sitting in a chair inside his home when two men pulled up in a white Chevy Impala. Jones then got into an altercation with the two men before asking them to leave, Sheriff Smith said. The men left, but came back with a gun.

Jones ran from his home, but the two men ran after him and shot him once in the back, said Sheriff Smith.

Jones made it to Flowers' home, stumbled to the back porch, collapsed and died, Flowers told NewsChannel 12.

"He was just laying there. So I checked him, checked him for a pulse," said Flowers. "At that time he was still breathing. But he never said a word or nothing."

Sheriff Smith describes the two suspects as black males, one who is believed to have dreadlocks.

Family members say Jones leaves behind a 5-year-old son.

"That's all he was trying to do, raise his little boy right, that's all he was trying to do, be a good dad to his son," said Anthony Flowers, Jones' cousin.

At last check, no arrests had been made. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Greene County Sheriff's Office.
