Former Mayor Lee Bettis no longer running for DA

NEW BERN, CRAVEN COUNTY - Former New Bern Mayor Lee Bettis said he is no longer running to become a district attorney.

Bettis was originally working to run for the district attorney seat of District 3B, comprised of Carteret, Craven and Pamlico Counties.

But Bettis told NewsChannel 12 Monday afternoon that he has decided not to run for DA anymore. He said he weighed the decision heavily, and with a recent back surgery and hip replacement, he wants to focus on his health and family.

Current DA Scott Thomas, a Democrat, ran unopposed in the primary election.

Bettis had previously served one term as New Bern's mayor.

He is still scheduled to appear in court on June 24 on several charges, including DWI, two counts of misdemeanor child abuse, and reckless driving to endanger.

According to investigators, Bettis had his two stepchildren in his car when he was pulled over by Havelock Police on May 6, 2013 for allegedly driving erratically.

Bettis blew a 0.00 on a breathalyzer, but was still charged with DWI. He did test positive for prescription Xanax, according to a State Crime Lab report, although the level of the drug in his bloodstream was not released.
