Fire chief: Family loses home, dog to fire

HUBERT, ONSLOW COUNTY - A couple lost their home and a dog to a fire in Onslow County, investigators said.

The fire happened at the corner of Queens Haven Road and Kingsbridge Road in Hubert Monday afternoon.

The couple who lived at the house were at work when the blaze happened, said Bear Creek Fire Chief Brian Romans. But the home is a total loss. Chief Romans said the fire started in the back corner of the home near the laundry room.

Chief Romans explained there were about 24 firefighters helping to put out the blaze.

"The rain did not help at all. The storm came through Monday- it spiked the wind gusts to 21 mph, which gave us a larger concern for the exposure of the empty structures on the one side of the house," Chief Romans said.

Chief Romans told NewsChannel 12 the family lost one of their dogs to the fire. But crews were able to rescue the couple's other dog from the living room. Romans said Animal Control took care of the dog overnight and returned it to the couple Tuesday morning.

Although the cause of the fire was under investigation, Chief Romans said he did not suspect foul play.

"With this particular fire, I don't really think there was anything that could have been done to prevent it. After the investigation, we will know more about the true cause and origin of the fire," Romans said.

The Red Cross was helping the victims.
