GREENVILLE, PITT COUNTY - The family of a man killed in his office a year and a half ago is offering a cash reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.
Police say Michael Burgwardt was using an apartment in a building he managed as an office when he was shot and killed. It happened on November 20th, 2011. Burgwardt was last seen alive the night before at about 8:30. The next morning around 9:45, a tenant went to check on him, only to find him dead as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.
Now, 18 months later, the case is still unsolved.
Residents recalled what it was like the morning Burgwardt's body was discovered; "The lady from upstairs saw that the door was open," said Mary Violante, who lives in the building where the homicide took place. "And she saw like, the body and she called the cops."
In the 9-1-1 tape, the tenant that called in said, "He's on the floor. I don't know if he's dead. I see his legs, I'm scared to see his face. I'm scared."
"You just hate it for the family and for the victim because nobody else is out there, you know, fightin' for ‘em now, it's up to us and we've gotta keep workin' on it," said Sergeant Joe Friday of the Greenville Police Department.
Greenville Police believe they have some solid leads, but say they need some more information. That's where the public comes in. "It's missing a little bit more and we need some more people to come forward," said Sergeant Friday.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Greenville Police Department's Major Crimes Unit.
