Family loses home in fire a few days before Christmas
A Winterville home is a total loss after a fire destroyed the home.
The fire happened on Gussie Lane in Winterville early Sunday morning.
When firefighters arrived flames were shooting out of the home. The cause of the fire is undetermined, according to officials. The home is considered a total loss.
Pastor Moses Ford owns the home and can’t believe it’s gone.
“For the stuff to get, I mean, um all burnt up and destroyed like that, I mean it's just a total loss,” he said.
Pastor Ford said he was next door at the church at the time, while a friend and his dog were inside the home.
“The only thing i said was 'Lord, have mercy.' that's all I could say is 'Lord, Jesus,’” he said.
That’s when he decided to bust down his front door to make sure the friend and dog got out safe.
“The fire started back there at the foot of the bed at the foot of the bed. And um, when he ran and got some water and then we threw the water down then that when the fire begin to blaze up,” Ford said.
Ford said the fire got out of control quickly and all they had time for was to escape. They lost all their possessions.
“Pictures, TV, bed, furniture,” he said.
And the worst part is having this happen so close to the holidays.
“The first thing, the first thing I said was 'Why me? Why did this have to happen right here before Christmas?' You know, family and everything was coming down for Christmas and stuff like that there," he said.
The Red Cross is helping the family out and they are staying in a trailer nearby.
