Former CIA director and retired Army Gen. David Petraeus is speaking publicly in North Carolina about national security issues on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks and as tensions remain high with Syria.

Petraeus is scheduled to participate in a question-and-answer session Wednesday evening on the Duke University campus in Durham. The event is sponsored by several Duke organizations and the Triangle Institute for Security Studies.

The former four-star general led U.S. military efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan and later the Central Intelligence Agency. He resigned from the director's post last November while acknowledging an extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell of Charlotte. Both he and Broadwell expressed regret for the pain the affair caused their respective spouses and families.
