Evangelical leaders in NC to call on church voters

CHARLOTTE - Family Research Council head Tony Perkins and former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum are in Charlotte on Sunday. They're leading a national call for conservative Christians to organize and vote in November.

Perkins, Santorum, evangelist Franklin Graham and others are due to speak during a 90-minute closed-circuit pep talk to about 2,000 churches and homes. Their broadcast from First Baptist Church of Charlotte focuses on abortion, gay marriage and the economy.

Family Research Council spokesman J.P. Duffy says Charlotte was chosen in part because North Carolina voters in May approved a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. Democrats meeting in Charlotte endorsed same-sex marriage and abortion rights.
