Escaped monkeys in N.C. injure man, sheriff says

MOYOCK, CURRITUCK COUNTY - A group of pet monkeys escaped from a North Carolina home Thursday, injuring one person.

Currituck County Sheriff Susan Johnson told that four pet Capuchin monkeys escaped from their enclosure at a home in Wedgewood Lakes in Moyock at about 11:30 a.m. Thursday. The monkeys then attacked a man.

According to the homeowner, the monkeys would become vicious when they get cornered. The victim drove himself to a hospital and will likely need stitches, said Sheriff Johnson.

Authorities were initially able to capture two of the four monkeys. A third monkey was tranquilized and killed. A deputy shot the fourth monkey, but that animal was still alive at last check, according to WVEC.

Animal Control has custody of the surviving three monkeys. Sheriff Johnson said the homeowner will likely not be facing charges.

Residents of the area received a reverse 911 call that warned them of the runaway animals. A nearby school was alerted as well.
