Memorial held for teen killed in skateboarding accident
Almost a thousand people attended a memorial service for a Carteret County teen killed in a skateboarding accident.
Andrew "Drew" Hughes' memorial service took place Wednesday morning at Emerald Isle Baptist Church, located at 304 Emerald Plantation Rd.
The 13-year-old Hughes was skateboarding in the Lands End neighborhood in Emerald Isle late Friday evening when he fell and hit his head, police said.
Emergency workers took Hughes to Carteret General Hospital. He was then transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where he died on Saturday from his injuries, according to investigators.
Hughes is survived by his parents and two older brothers.
"We were all best friends. We did everything together. We watched movies together, we fought with each other," said his oldest brother, Brewer Hughes.
"He was always happy. He was always making us laugh," said Zack Hughes, the teen's other brother.
Hughe's obituary on the website of the Brooks Funeral Home reads as follows:
"Drew was a wonderful, caring, genuine person who had a positive impact on many lives. He could light up a room with his happy charisma.
"Drew was very athletic. He grew-up playing baseball at Western Park, played Pop-Warner Football for the Newport Vikings, as well as football and basketball at Broad Creek Middle School where he was additionally a member of the track team.
"Drew was a rising freshman at Croatan High School. He had many friends who will miss him."
"I always thought I'd know him my whole life," John Guarino, Drew's close friend, said. "He was one of my best friends and one of my favorites."
"His smile would just light up the room," Abigail Brazda, another close friend said.
As of Wednesday morning, $25,095 have been collected for Hughes' funeral expenses. That number surpasses the initial goal of raising $15,000.
