NEW BERN, CRAVEN COUNTY -

Police said they are searching for an armed man who robbed a delivery truck driver and forced a Craven County school to go on lockdown.

According to investigators, the gunman robbed a FedEx driver on Simmons Street, near J.T. Barber Elementary School in New Bern. There was no word on what the suspect allegedly stole or if the driver was injured.

Ontario Bryant has a child at J.T. Barber Elementary School. He said when he first saw the commotion on Washington Street, he went straight to the school to get his son.

"I just got a phone call saying that someone with a gun was over here at J.T. Barber, so my main concern was just trying to get my son out of school and make sure he was alright," Bryant said.

Paula Jones is the owner of A Touch of Love Day Care, right across the street from where the robbery took place. Jones said the street is always busy and it's the last place you'd expect a robbery to happen.

"I don't want to be looking over my shoulder because I have people's children here and I don't want anything happening to them or anyone else," Jones said.

Police said a K-9 unit was deployed to find the man, but could not. Officers are still actively searching for the suspect.

The suspect is described as a black male, about 35 years old, wearing a Navy hat and a gray sweatshirt.

J.T. Barber Elementary, located at 1700 Cobb St., was on lockdown from 10:20 a.m. to 11 a.m. as a precaution, officials said. No injuries were reported there.

Extra police officers were at the school during dismissal at noon, investigators said.
