GREENVILLE, PITT COUNTY - Greenville Police are on the hunt for two people who robbed a man at gunpoint Monday night.

Authorities said this happened at 1407 E. 4th Street around 7:30 p.m.

ECU senior, Matthew Ezzell, said he had just returned from the grocery store and was out on his balcony smoking when two men on the ground started talking to him.

"They asked if they could talk to me about my car and I said sure and I walked down there and then as soon as I got down there they said 'Give me all your money,'" Ezzell said.

He said one of the men opened his jacket and showed him his pistol, while the other man reached in Ezzell's pocket and grabbed his wallet.

"I was really terrified," he said.

Ezzell said he was only thinking about one thing in that moment.

"To go inside as quickly as possible and I called my parents right away," he said.

Ezzell said he had just cashed a check earlier that day so the armed robbers stole nearly $400 in cash.

"I just thought these guys looked like nice guys. That's why I approached them because I didn't think anything of it. I didn't think I was about to be robbed or anything …I mean I've heard that this has happened to people in the past, I just never thought it would happen to me," he said.

Many students living in the historic downtown district walk to and from campus every day. One student NewsChannel 12 talked with said while she generally feels safe walking in the area, she's not taking any chances now that something like this has happened so close to home.

"Safety is really important to me, feeling comfortable in my home and being able to go about freely and not having to worry if someone is going to come up to me and rob me. So, it's very unsettling," Roxanne Parnell, an ECU senior said.

Both students shared ideas on how to stay safe.

"I'll definitely keep the lights on outside at all times and keep everything locked up. And I have dogs so that helps to be aware with what's around," Parnell said.

"I'm just not going to approach anyone I don't know. I'm not going to take another chance like that again," Ezzell said.

At last check, no suspects had been arrested. Ezzell said they drove away in a burgundy Saturn.
