GREENVILLE, Pitt County - Jeff Lebo has resigned as head men's basketball coach at East Carolina University.

Jeff Goodman of ESPN tweeted the news just before 4 p.m. Wednesday. NewsChannel 12's Brian North and Ariel Epstein also confirmed the announcement. Assistant coach Michael Perry, who filled in for 14 games last season after Lebo had hip surgery, is taking over coaching duties immediately.

A press conference by ECU Athletics Director Jeff Compher and Lebo Wednesday made the news official. Lebo had a 116-122 record at ECU over eight seasons. That made Lebo the winningest coach at ECU during the school's NCAA Division I history.

This season's team is 2-4 and is scheduled to play UNC Wilmington Thursday at Williams Arena on the ECU campus.
