Troopers have identified the man killed by a passing car in Pitt County Saturday morning.
According to investigators, 51-year-old Kenan Fleming, of Greenville, stopped his truck on the side of JC Galloway Road, southeast of Greenville, to pick up a trash can that was dropped from his vehicle. That was when a passing car hit and killed Fleming, troopers said. It happened at about 5:50 a.m. Saturday.
Troopers said a 16-year-old was driving the car that hit the victim. Authorities said the teenager was very distraught by what happened. Troopers said it was foggy that morning and the teen did nothing wrong. He and his passenger were taken to a hospital, but neither was injured. Troopers are not filing charges against the teenager.
Evan Johnston is the director of Winterville Parks and Recreation. He is a longtime friend and co-worker of Fleming’s. He said Fleming was a family man but he was equally devoted to his job as the maintenance supervisor. He had been in that position for the last 6 years.
“He put his heart and soul into his work. You know he loved his job. He loved the people he worked with. He loved the town. He loved parks and recreation,” Johnston said.
Bob Connelly has lived next to Fleming for more than 20 years. He said he's still trying to process what happened.
“Oh, just like everyone else it was a shock to us--so sudden. If someone is sick you kind of expect things. But when you're here one minute and gone the next that has got to be bad. And I really feel sorry for the family,” he said.
Connelly said his friend was always doing something outside.
“He was an outdoor type person. He liked to hunt and fish,” he said.
Johnston believes Fleming was heading out to do something like that when he got killed.
“He’s a big bear hunter and I think he was going to go work with his dogs,” Johnston said.
However, now it’s an activity he will never get the chance to do again.
“He touched so many lives. You just never know,” he said.
At last check, no funeral arrangements had been set. Fleming leaves behind his wife and two children.
