Three people died in a single car crash in Bertie County Friday night. Dispatchers said it happened east of the Perry School and Wakelon Road intersection.
A couple and their granddaughter were killed in the crash. The driver, Willie Lee Perry, 48, and his two passengers, Phyllis Hayes Perry, 51, and Madison Jaylaya Perry, 1, all died as a result of the crash.
Brother of Phyllis, Kelvin Hayes, said the family was on their way to a basketball game at Bertie High School. Hayes said the couple had a passion for each other and people.
"They were so good together. I just I know we are going to miss how they were together, because they were always laughing, having fun, just a fun loving couple," Hayes said. The grandparents had four kids.
The mother of Madison, Rashia Johnson, said Madison was always happy, and always put a smile on everyone's face.
According to authorities, the car was traveling north on Wakelon road when it went off the right side, struck a ditch, and ran into a tree.
