A taxi driver risks her life during a routine cab ride Saturday night. Onslow County Deputies arrested Timothy Dewayne Smith for allegedly holding that cab driver at knife point.
The cab driver, Amanda Batchelor, with Yellow Cab in Jacksonville said the customer, Timothy Dewayne Smith, wanted to be picked up on Tadpole Lane near Maysville.
According to Batchelor, as she was nearing Tadpole Lane, she saw the customer off of Hwy 17 waving his arms to flag her down.
"He didn't look suspicious at all. He wasn't jittery,” Batchelor said.
She said Smith got in the cab and pulled out a knife before she could even put the cab in reverse.
“He put his right hand here with a knife on my throat and said, ‘ I'm not playing give it all up now and you'll survive.’,” Batchelor said.
She said she handed over her money, and then the suspect walked away with it.
"He walked away like it was the best thing in the world,” Batchelor said.
Batchelor said by the time he reached the hood of her car she'd already called for help.
“He had the nerve and audacity to walk away like he wasn't going to get caught," Batchelor said.
Onslow County Deputies found and arrested Smith shortly after 11 Saturday night.
"He was at the address I was supposed to pick up from,’ Batchelor said.
Batchelor said in the last two weeks two other Onslow County cab drivers have been robbed at gunpoint. She said she hopes those suspects are caught soon.
Smith was put in the Onslow County Detention Center under a $100,000 bond.
