Deputies: Wayne County teens die in double suicide

WAYNE COUNTY - Deputies said two Wayne County teens have died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, investigators found 15-year-old Malia Porter with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at about 3:30 p.m. Monday on Capps Bridge Road northwest of Goldsboro. Porter was still alive at that time.

Deputies said they also found Porter's boyfriend, 16-year-old Spenser Terry Garrison, dead in a pickup truck nearby. Investigators said they believed Garrison shot himself earlier that day, but an exact time was unknown.

Porter, who was outside that truck when she was found, was taken to Vidant Medical Center, where she died after midnight Tuesday, said deputies.

Both teens were sophomores at Rosewood High School.

Senior Adam Newcome said Garrison was one of his best friends. Newcome said Garrison and Porter were a happy couple who had been together for almost a year.

"They were just the best couple ever. I mean, I never, never met someone so happy. It's just shocking because I never thought this would happen," Newcome told NewsChannel 12.

Ken Derksen, the director of Communication Services for Wayne County Schools, said students are devastated.

"You know, this is a very small school. This impacts everybody here at the school," Derksen said. "For students who may need somebody to talk with, to work through their grief, we have a district crisis team on campus."

Wayne County Sheriff C.A. Winders issued the following statement:

"My heart goes out to the families of these young people. This is just such a tragic loss for all involved. These two young people made a decision without thinking that has affected their families, their friends and other loved ones. They never got to live a life. My advice to young people. If there is something going on in your life and you need help, please find someone to talk to. Find a family member, a friend, a trusted adult, but please find someone to talk to. The events which unfolded [Monday] is not the answer."

A motive is unknown. The investigation is ongoing.
