BEAUFORT, CARTERET COUNTY - Deputies said a veterinary technician was trying to traffic drugs in a mobile veterinary services unit.
Jennifer Barnes, 39, of Beaufort, was arrested and charged on March 11th, according to a news release. Barnes has been charged with two counts of embezzlement of controlled substance by employee and two counts of trafficking, opium or heroin.
Investigators said Barnes was employed as a veterinary technician by a grant program funded through the Brandt Foundation and was responsible for the inventory control of the medications. A detective then received information about a mobile veterinary services unit, Spay to Save, missing an undetermined amount of hydromorphone vials used in the treatment of animals.
Barnes was released on an $25,000 bond.
