Investigators say someone shot the Life Gate Baptist Church sign.
Pastor Julian Pierce said a volunteer at the church was trying to change the message on their sign out front when he noticed something strange.
“He started removing the letters he noticed the hole and he knew something was wrong,” Pierce said.
Pitt County Sheriff’s Office said this happened sometime between Sunday night and Tuesday morning someone fired a gun at the sign.
The volunteer discovered the bullet hole Tuesday afternoon and called Pastor Pierce for help.
“The [bullet] went in through the plexiglass and actually went through the sign and it came out on the other side of the sign,” he said.
Most people NewsChannel 12 talked with in the community were shocked that something like this happened. Some people were even concerned for their safety.
“Not real good when you got a youngin' running around all the time [and there’s a] school across the street. Especially late at night, you don't know where the bullets will go. I mean they can go through windows, whatever, anytime of night,” an anonymous neighbor said.
He continued, “if they'll do it to a church sign, they'll do it to an occupied dwelling so I don't know it's just what this world is coming to.”
Pastor Pierce said he is just trying to spread God's word through the messages on his board.
“We have not received any kind of hate mail or anything such as that. We have not had anyone been mad with us for any reason that we're aware of or anything like that,” he said.
He said he hopes the people responsible for damaging it get caught soon.
“We’ll pray for those who shot our sign that the Lord will speak to their heart and they won't do such things in the future,” he said.
Pastor Pierce said they do plan to fix the sign. He said he has a group coming to look at it hopefully within the next week.
