"This man tried to kill me," Beasley said. "I don't even understand what his motive was. I've asked myself time and time again and I don't know what his motive was."
Investigators said Potter also used a knife to cut his own throat.
Both Potter and Beasley were taken to the hospital. Potter was listed in fair condition at Vidant Medical Center as of Monday afternoon.
Beasley said he would like the district attorney to charge Potter with attempted murder instead of assault with intent to kill.
According to investigators, Potter has several felony stolen firearm charges pending. He is also accused of escaping from a local jail.
In addition, Potter allegedly set his girlfriend's shed on fire near Grantsboro last year. A charge for burning other buildings is pending, deputies said.
