RICHLANDS, ONSLOW COUNTY - Investigators say a man shot his wife several times near Richlands Sunday night, killing the mother of three.
According to the Onslow County Sheriff's Office, 31-year-old Jordan Skaggs was shot and killed at her home on the 500 block of Cherry Blossom Lane, about 6 miles southwest of Richlands.
Investigators said they went to the scene at about 9:45 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived, they found Jordan Skaggs dead with several gunshot wounds to the chest.
Sheriff Ed Brown said Jordan Skaggs and her three children were at a neighbor's pool. She then went home, where an argument began between her and her husband, 32-year-old Marine Sgt. Christopher Michael Skaggs, Sheriff Brown said.
Christopher Skaggs then shot his wife several times in the chest with a handgun, killing her, said Sheriff Brown.
Christopher Skaggs was arrested and charged with an open count of murder, the Sheriff's Office said. He was being held under no bond.
Deputies said they confiscated the gun and the investigation is ongoing.
Christopher Skaggs is a Marine assigned as a staff member at the School of Infantry-East aboard Camp Geiger, a satellite facility of Camp Lejuene, base officials said. He was working in the logistics section of Infantry Training Battalion.
Because the suspect is a Marine, the NCIS is also investigating.
Sheriff Brown said Christopher and Jordan Skaggs were married for six years, and there was a history of abuse.
"This is not something that you can predict, not something that you can say, 'This is why it happened,'" said Sheriff Ed Brown. "The tragedy is, that sooner or later... something like this could come up and it could come up at any time. Abuse leads to more abuse and more abuse leads to, sooner or later, actual physical deadly abuse, and that's what you try to get across to the victims."
But a neighbor told NewsChannel 12 he never saw any trouble between the suspect and his wife.
"He seemed normal to me, seemed like an outstanding guy. You know, he was a Marine," said neighbor Derek Johnson. "Nothing stood out to me that he was mentally unstable or anything like that. I never saw them argue, never saw them fight."
Johnson said he was home when he heard gunshots from across the street.
"I went outside and I stood in my driveway and I waited a few minutes," Johnson said. "That's when the gentleman came out running from the back of his house and the cops took him down in the front yard."
The Skaggs' three children are staying at the home of a neighbor, who said Jordan Skaggs was a caring mother who will be missed.
Christopher Skaggs is originally from Washington, Pa. He enlisted in the Marine Corps as an infantryman on March 29, 2006, Camp Lejeune officials said. Skaggs was deployed to Iraq twice and Afghanistan once. He was promoted to his current rank of sergeant on Jan. 1, 2012.
Deputies are investigating the fatal shooting of a woman in Onslow County.
The Onslow County Sheriff's Office issued a release at about 12:15 a.m. Monday, saying that one woman was shot and killed in the Richlands area. The victim's identity and the exact location were not revealed.
There was also no word on what led up to the shooting.
The Sheriff's Office is expected to release more details Monday. NewsChannel 12 is working to learn more.
