A Wayne County man, accused of sexually assaulting two underage girls, was arrested and jailed under an almost $1 million bond.
Deputies said 22-year-old Michael McLean Smith, of Goldsboro, lied about his age and sexually assaulted the two girls in June 2013. According to investigators, the victims only knew the suspect for a short period of time.
At first, Smith was cooperative, deputies said. But the suspect later allegedly tried to escape from authorities.
Smith was arrested on a dirt path at the northern end of Wayne County, according to investigators. He was charged with statutory rape and two counts of statutory sexual offense, and was being jailed under a $950,000 secured bond.
