DUPLIN COUNTY -

Investigators in California have arrested a suspect wanted in the shooting death of a man found outside a Duplin County KFC.

According to the Duplin County Sheriff's Office, 25-year-old James Newton (pictured left) was arrested Sunday afternoon in a hotel in Santa Barbara, Calif. Newtown is cooperating with investigators and is expected to be extradited back to North Carolina within a week.

Newton is accused of killing 21-year-old McKinley Beaty Jr., of Norfolk, Va.

Beaty was found on Feb. 13 lying in the turning lane of a KFC restaurant on Highway 24 west of Warsaw, said Duplin County Sheriff Blake Wallace. The victim had several gunshot wounds.

Sheriff Wallace said the victim either died at a hospital or while en route.

Investigators said Beaty has no family in Warsaw and has no connection there. It was unclear why he was in the area.

Deputies said they are still looking for one more suspect in Beaty's death: 23-year-old Isaiah Smith. He is wanted on an open count of murder.

There is no word on a motive. Both suspects are from Sampson County.
