WASHINGTON COUNTY - Investigators say a father used a knife to defend his seven children from home intruders in Washington County Friday morning. The father told NewsChannel 12 two of the suspects are his wife's cousins.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office said the home invasion happened on Kim's Loop Road just outside Plymouth.
Devonne Ward, 25, Tommy Ward Jr., 22, and Alton Hardy, 23, broke into the bedroom of the home just after 1 a.m. Friday, according to the Sheriff's Office. One of them had a gun, investigators said.
Seven children, their father, mother, and 83-year-old grandmother were inside the residence at the time.
The father, Kevin Spruill, first grabbed a baseball bat, but the suspects took it from him, deputies said.
"They swung at me two times. I guess they got the bat from me, and then I ran to the kitchen and got the knife out the kitchen," Spruill said.
The father used a knife to cut one of the home intruders, Devonne Ward, in the arm, investigators explained.
But the father suffered bruises on his face and lost one tooth while fighting the trio, according to deputies.
The father was treated at the hospital in Plymouth. The intruder who was cut was treated at the hospital as well, said investigators.
The father said two of the suspects, Devonne Ward and Tommy Ward, are no strangers to him-- they are his wife's cousins.
The three suspects have been arrested and charged with first-degree burglary and assault inflicting serious injury, said the Sheriff's Office. They are each being held under a $25,000 bond.
