NEWPORT CARTERET COUNTY - A Carteret County man has been arrested for allegedly stealing from his neighbors and selling the goods on Craigslist. Just months before, the suspect had been released from prison for the same type of crime.
On June 8, Carteret County deputies arrested Craig Michael Ethier, 21, of West Southwinds Drive in Newport. Detectives said Ethier broke into various cars, homes, sheds and garages in the Paradise East community, where he lives.
Ethier was charged with seven counts of breaking and entering into vehicles, three counts of residential breaking and entering, one count of burglary, one count of larceny of a firearm, 13 counts each of larceny and possession of stolen goods, and one count of obtaining property by false pretenses.
More charges are pending as the recovered items get matched up to the victims' reports, deputies said. Ethier was being held in the Carteret County Jail under a $50,000 bond.
Deputies said some of the stolen properties have already been sold and other items were found underneath a nearby vacant home. The investigation is ongoing.
The suspect has a history of breaking and entering. He was released from prison in November 2012 after serving a two-year sentence for more than 25 similar charges, investigators said. Those crimes also targeted people in his neighborhood.
