BEAUFORT COUNTY - Investigators in Beaufort County say they have an opiate epidemic on their hands after the Sheriff's Office seized 56 bags of heroin from a home.
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office said deputies arrested 37-year-old Quinton Baldwin, of Washington, on Monday.
According to investigators, they received information that Baldwin was involved in the distribution of heroin. Deputies said they then witnessed Baldwin conducting a drug transaction on Martin Luther King Bolevard in Washington.
Investigators said they detained Baldwin after the transaction, then searched the suspect's home-- where they found 56 bags of heroin, a straw used for packaging heroin, a razor blade for cutting and packaging heroin, and a strainer used to strain large amounts of heroin before packaging.
Baldwin is charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver heroin, manufacturing heroin, and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the Sheriff's Office. He was being held under a $300,000 secured bond.
The suspect is already on probation for possession with intent to sell and deliver heroin, investigators added.
Many heroin addicts came to heroin from taking prescription painkillers, said Capt. Russell Davenport, the head of the Narcotics Unit at the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. Many of the doctors in the area have been alerted, so addicts turn to streets for heroin to get the same high.
"It's an opiate and we have a diversion officer now that specifically investigates those types of cases," said Capt. Davenport.
Capt. Davenport has a warning for anyone who wants to sell heroin in his county.
"If they're selling any drugs in Beaufort County, specifically heroin, they're definitely going to get arrested," Capt. Davenport said. "It may not be today or tomorrow, but soon they'll get arrested."
