Deputies: Man faces felonies from several counties for string of vehicle thefts
A man is facing felony charges from several Eastern Carolina counties for a string of alleged vehicle thefts. Deputies said the suspect and two others even stole vehicles that were broken down on the side of a road.
Lamont D'Angelo Speight (pictured) has been charged with multiple felony counts from Pitt, Wilson and Wayne Counties, with additional charges expected from Nash County.
According to Pitt County investigators, Speight and two other suspects, Maurice Ruffin and Shaiesha Michelle Holden, stole a 1995 Chevy Tahoe that was broken down on U.S. 264, near the 70 mile marker. The truck belongs to a Raleigh man.
Detectives said they found the stolen vehicle at a salvage yard in Dudley, Wayne County. Investigators said they then learned that Speight had sold another stolen vehicle to the same business. That car, a 1995 Cadillac Deville, belongs to a Pitt County resident.
NewsChannel 12 talked with the Cadillac's owner, Trivilla Connor, who said her car was also broken down on U.S. 264 when it was stolen.
"My car broke down. Well, I had a flat tire on a Saturday. Came back that Tuesday and the car was gone," Connor said.
Connor said she tried not to panic.
"I was okay until they said 'No ma'am. We don't have your car.' And then I said 'Well, then evidently someone has stolen my car' and then that's when it really hit me," she said.
Upon further investigation, detectives said they learned that Speight had sold several other cars to the salvage yard, including a truck from Wilson County that was stolen in June 2013.
Pitt County detectives said when they searched Speights's home in Wilson on July 31, they discovered that the suspect's 2004 Dodge Ram was used to tow the stolen vehicles from U.S. 264. Authorities said they also found the tag of a stolen vehicle from Nash County. A stolen lawn mover and utility trailer were discovered at Speight's home as well, along with a pistol, investigators said.
Speight was arrested and charged by the Pitt County Sheriff's Office with two counts of larceny of a motor vehicle, two counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, and two counts of injury to personal property.
Meanwhile, the Wilson County Sheriff's Office has charged Speight with two counts of larceny of a motor vehicle, felony possession of stolen property, felony larceny, felony possession of a firearm by a felon, and two counts of misdemeanor possession of stolen property.
In addition, Wayne County deputies have charged Speight with two counts of felony obtaining property by false pretense. More charges are expected from that county.
The Nash County Sheriff's Office is also expected to file charges against Speight.
Speight was being held in the Pitt County Detention Center under a $117,500 secure bond. Investigators said the suspect has an extensive criminal history, and was previously charged on July 11 for allegedly stealing another car off U.S. 264 and selling it for scrap in Wilson.
Speight's alleged accomplices were also arrested. Ruffin and Holden, both of Wilson, have each been charged with two counts of larceny of a motor vehicle, two counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, and two counts of injury to personal property.
Ruffin was being jailed at the Pitt County Detention Center under a $25,000 secure bond. Holden, who deputies said is the girlfriend of Ruffin, was arrested in Wilson County and was being held under a $7,500 secure bond.
Pitt County detectives said they will continue to investigate. Additional arrests are possible.
