NORTH CAROLINA - The sales tax holiday is underway and will last until 11:59 p.m. Sunday night.
Hundreds of parents and children lined up Friday for the back-to-school items that are exempt this holiday weekend.
Tashua Wilson is one of those parents.
"I'm hoping to find some deals on clothes, shoes, book bags and school supplies," Wilson said.
And with a 15-year-old and 4-year-old at home savings are everything these days.
"I'm trying to save a whole lot," she said.
Marvis Evans may not have any kids left in the nest but that isn't stopping her from helping those in need.
"I shop for the foster care children at the Department of Social Services each year. I try to get at least 2 backpacks and get those backpacks completed with supplies," Evans said.
Governor Beverly Perdue was in New Bern for her annual "Build a Backpack" that helps provide backpacks complete with school supplies for children in need.
"This is my favorite time of the year. I love doing this and finding out what children need in the 21st century," she said.
Governor Perdue also hopes people will help teachers get supplies for their classrooms for the coming school year.
"If we don't do this for them then they'll have to do it themselves and we all know how hard that can be," she said.
Shoppers enjoy saving tax dollars on clothing and back to school supplies but it's the big ticket items like computers worth up to $3,500 dollars that bring the real savings.
Brenda Dixon got a new Apple laptop and a wireless printer.
"I think [I saved] a hundred and some dollars. [It's] fantastic. It really is a lot so that was my one purpose in getting it," Dixon said.
Some of the items included on the tax free list are clothing, shoes and school supplies under $100 dollars. Also, sports and recreation items under $50 dollars are tax free, along with computer equipment up to $250 dollars.
However, not everything may be on your children's school lists. For a complete list of items that are exempt this weekend click here: http://www.dornc.com/taxes/sales/holiday_exempt.pdf
