NEW BERN, CRAVEN COUNTY - The 36th Annual NewsChannel 12 Cystic Fibrosis Telethon raised over $400,000 Saturday night.
The event featured 21 local acts and the NewsChannel 12 anchors hosting the event from start to finish.
The final tally was $412,835 raised, thanks to donations from community members.
It's the nation's largest all-volunteer telethon and it's the only telethon for cystic fibrosis. Donations through this event raised $410,448 last year to support research for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Over the years NewsChannel 12 and generous donors have raised over $8,570,000. The money raised helps CF patients improve their lives dramatically.
Cystic fibrosis is the nation's largest genetic killer of children and younger adults. It causes the body to create a thick, sticky mucus that affects many major organs, especially the lungs, pancreas and intestines.
CF patients and their families lead lives with lots of medications, daily chest treatments and many hospital stays for "tuneups".
