A longtime friend of NewsChannel 12 has passed away.
Amy Holliday, a cystic fibrosis patient, died Tuesday night after a long battle with the disease.
We followed Amy's long journey with cystic fibrosis since 1999, when she was 22 years old.
She had a double lung transplant in 2009, and she appeared at our annual CF Telethon for many years.
We interviewed Amy in both 2005 and 2007 as she waited for her transplant.
She told us, "Now instead of using a little bit of oxygen, I'm using a lot of oxygen. It's all day and night. Now I have to use a machine at night to clear out my lungs because my lungs are failing."
Loved ones and church members at Crossroads Baptist in New Bern raised money to help pay for her medical bills. Pastor Buford Lewis said despite her illness, her spirit remained strong.
"She was a loving, giving person, very independent," Lewis said. "[She] did not like to ask for help, did not like to be helped. She saw herself as helping other people, wanting to do for other people."
This year's Cystic Fibrosis Telethon will air live on NewsChannel 12 on Sat., Aug. 9.
