Officials say an 8-year-old boy is hospitalized after Transylvania County rescue personnel pulled him Sunday from the East Fork of the French Broad River.
The Times-News of Hendersonville reports that the unidentified boy had been trapped under water for nearly 15 minutes.
Rosman Fire Rescue Capt. Daniel Powell said the boy was tubing down the East Fork on Sunday when he went over a cascade and got hung up on a tree.
The boy was found lodged under a log at the bottom of the cascade. Rescue workers started CPR in the water once the boy was dislodged.
Powell said the child took his first breath in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. The boy was taken to Transylvania Regional Hospital and then airlifted to Mission Hospitals.
