Craven County deputies search for home intruder who shot man

CRAVEN COUNTY - Deputies said they are actively searching for a gunman who shot a man in his home early Friday.

According to Capt. Joe Heckman of the Craven County Sheriff's Office, the shooting happened at a home on the 1300 block of Southwest Craven Middle School Road, about 10 miles northwest of New Bern.

An intruder entered the home at about 2 a.m. Friday and shot 38-year-old Leo Mitchell in the stomach, Capt. Heckman said. The victim was taken to Vidant Medical Center, where he was stable at last check.

There is no word on a motive.

Capt. Heckman said deputies are actively searching for the shooter. A description of the suspect has not been released.
