Editor's Note: It is typically NewsChannel 12 policy not to identify the victims of sex crimes. In this case, authorities released the name of Abigaile Lefevers as a missing person which was first reported by this station as the subject of an Amber Alert.
NEWPORT – A 12-year-old Carteret County girl was found with a 38-year-old convicted sex offender in Miami after a multi-state search that started in North Carolina.
Police reports issued Thursday revealed that juvenile Abigaile Lefevers went along with Timothy Newman on a trip to Florida, and left Sunday night from her home in Newport. She was first reported missing Monday morning, and was with Newman when the pair was found Wednesday evening.
According to police documents, Lefevers and Newman left together on Sunday and headed south along the coast. This was after Newman had plotted with Lefevers to run away together, according to reports.
Documents also stated that both Newman and Lefevers told authorities that they had a sexual relationship dating back to July of this year. Newman told police that he'd known Lefevers since she was 5 years old, records stated.
Newman also told authorities that they had planned to get married, and that they had engaged in sexual activity while they were on the run from North Carolina to Florida.
In the documents, Newman admitted to knowing that Lefevers was only 12 years old. Also included was Lefevers' admission to knowing that Newman was a convicted sex offender.
Evidence also shows that the two communicated often via text messaging, and that messages sent were often sexual in nature.
Newman will be charged, the documents said, with knowingly coercing an individual under the age of 18 to engage in sexual activity as well as traveling between states for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity.
Newman holds a prior conviction in 2004 for having sex with an individual under the age of 13. He spent nearly seven years in prison.
