NEW BERN, CRAVEN COUNTY - Almost two years ago, the Bridgepointe Marina in New Bern had to be shut down because of damage from Hurricane Irene. But the marina is expected to reopen soon, and boaters will be seeing some upgrades.
"There was enough damage there that we had to close the marina entirely. But we are anxious as anybody to get it back up and running," said owner Brynn Thomas.
Thomas old NewsChannel 12 construction on the marina will start at the end of this week, and it should be ready by sometime in July. The marina will have 120 spots like before. But Thomas also plans to add improvements, such as widening the floating docks from 8 to 10 feet.
"The marina will be much nicer than it was even at the time it was operating because of the types of materials and standards we're going to build this marina with," Thomas said.
Clifton Nay is a bartender at Bambooz Tiki Bar, right in front of the marina. He said he's glad the marina will soon reopen.
"I think it's really going to help us with more of a steady crowd coming through and help sales. It would just be nice to see it done," said Nay.
Thomas said despite the marina being shut down for so long, he is optimistic about its future.
"I think we'll have the nicest marina in New Bern once it's complete," he said.
Thomas said he also plans to make improvements to the Bridgepointe Hotel within the next 12 months.
