JACKSONVILLE, ONSLOW COUNTY - A local Onslow County church is giving away thousands of household items to families in need.
Sandy Run Missionary Baptist Church in Jacksonville is hosting its fourth annual Harvest of Blessings Giveaway Friday and Saturday.
Through donations from the community and private vendors, the church is able to give away furniture, clothes, household appliances and toys, organizers said. Each family can pick six of the items for free.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday for those who have a referral. On Saturday, the event will be open to the public and will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Church volunteer Delacey Green said it is wonderful to help out at this event every year.
"The line was long and people were walking on both sides of the road, and it was just amazing, like blessings falling out of the sky," Green said.
Participant Jody Guerra said she is very thankful for the help. With the recent cut on food stamps, these items really mean a lot, Guerra said.
"This is a good thing that they have, so people can get food, get some clothes items, and that way, you know you have a little more than what you already had," Guerra said.
On Saturday, an anonymous donor will also provide free meals to everyone that attends the giveaway.
Church members hope to help more than 3,000 people this year.
