Officials have identified the driver killed in a single-vehicle wreck in Vanceboro.
Troopers said Denolen Marteze Pugh, 31, was killed in a crash on River Road around 6 p.m. Saturday. Pugh leaves behind a nine-year-old daughter.
Pugh was the only person in the gold GMC Yukon when he over-corrected, drove off the road and wrapped around a tree, troopers said.
Pugh was heading home to Ayden when he wrecked.
Troopers believe Pugh died on impact.
Donna Whitehurst says she was standing at her front door, and watched the wreck happen.
"He came up and it was like about the time he got to the mailbox, it was like wham. It didn't look like he was speeding or anything,” she said.
Whitehurst said her boyfriend immediately ran to the car to see if Pugh was OK.
"He tried to check for a pulse. He grabbed the man's hand and said hey buddy if you can hear me move your fingers, he wouldn't do anything," she explains.
Pugh’s family was not ready to speak on camera, but family members said that Pugh was a family man, a caring person who always made them laugh.
Family told NewsChannel 12 that Pugh and his nine-year-old daughter were very close.
Troopers said speed was not a factor in the accident.
