A car crashed into an Onslow County convenience store Thursday night, and the investigating trooper said distracted driving could be to blame.
According to Trooper Leonard Alverado, 18-year-old Reginald Adam Morton was traveling on Highway 258, heading towards Richlands, when he crossed the center line and hit another vehicle at the intersection of Highway 258 and Catherine Lake Road.
Morton's car then hit a traffic box, before flipping over and crashing into the side of the Stop & Shop convenience store, Trooper Alverado said. The crash happened at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Belinda Harris, whose grandfather had built the store, saw the wreckage for herself.
"I was shocked when I came down the hill a while ago. I could not believe what I was seeing because the store's been here for so long. It's been here since the early 50s. I mean, we're talking over 50 years and now, a part of it is gone," Harris said.
According to Trooper Alverado, Morton became distracted when he dropped his cell phone, leading to the wreck. He has been charged with reckless driving and a left of center violation.
Morton was taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital, but his condition was not released. The driver in the other vehicle was not hurt, Trooper Alverado said.
