Bridges dedicated in honor of fallen lawmen

WILLIAMSTON, MARTIN COUNTY - A highway bridge in Martin County was dedicated Thursday in memory of the late Deputy Charlie Brown Jr., who died in the line of duty.

The bridge is part of Highway 64 west, in the Williamston area.

"I feel like he's always with me," Brown's widow, Cindy Brown, after a dedication ceremony at the Martin County Courthouse.

The bridge is along the route Charlie took to work, and is along a route Cindy regularly takes, she said.

That's why she chose the location.

She said, at first, "it's going to be difficult to see [the bridge sign]."

Brown was shot in 2009 after responding to a man with a gun call in Williamston.

A separate bridge was dedicated Thursday in memory of Martin County Sheriff Jerry Beach, who died in 1992 after being shot during a bank robbery call.

That bridge is part the Highway 64 overpass above Highway 17.

The suspect in Brown's death died after authorities returned fire; the suspect in the Beach case hanged himself days after the incident.
