NEWPORT - Three boys, who got lost in the Croatan National Forest on Monday, are reunited with their families.
The children, ages 10, 12 and 14, went into the forest around the Little Doo Mud Bog, located near the intersection of Tom Mann Road and Masontown Town Road in Newport, said Capt. Jason Wank of the Carteret County Sheriff's Office.
According to family members, the boys were taking a walk in the forest at about 11 a.m. when they got lost.
"Somehow they got disoriented, and just didn't know where they were," said Jason Nelson, father of the oldest boy.
Helicopter Pedro, deployed from Cherry Point, located the three boys and extracted them, said Capt. Wank.
"Just really scared me when they had to call Pedro and have all this line of cars and everything out here," said Allison Pavlik, mother of the younger boys.
The oldest of the three boys is a Boy Scout, and he helped keep the group safe, family members said.
"They banded together, and the littlest one had lost his shoes, so everyone donated socks to keep his feet warm," Nelson said. "They all worked together and it's a happy ending."
Deputies, members of the Carteret County Emergency Services and Newport Fire and Rescue took part in the search. Two helicopters, as well as K9 units, were also part of the operation.
"I want to thank everybody, there were a lot of people involved in this," Pavlik said.
