Bonner Bridge to close for 30 minutes for scan

NAGS HEAD, DARE COUNTY - Traffic will come to a halt on the Bonner Bridge for 30 minutes so workers with the state Transportation Department can scan the bridge.

DOT officials say workers will halt traffic in both directions on the bridge over the Oregon Inlet beginning at 9 a.m. Monday.

In 2012, scanning technology was installed to allow DOT to monitor any movement of the bridge. A series of points are marked along 150 of the bridge's 200 spans.  DOT surveys each point before the start of hurricane season and after each storm to detect any movement.

The scan Monday will be the first of many scheduled scans throughout the year.

DOT began the process of trying to replace the Bonner Bridge in 1989.  Environmentalists have sued, and the case remains in court.
