Police have identified the man found dead behind a barbecue restaurant in Martin County Wednesday.
According to Williamston Police, 55-year-old Jackie Lasan Blount's body was discovered in the parking lot of Shaw's Bar-B-Q House at 202 West Blvd. Employees arriving for work Wednesday morning found the body, then called police at about 5:27 a.m., investigators said.
Blount's family went to the scene in hopes of seeing if the body was in fact his. "We was not expecting that the guy back here was our cousin, to be dead. It's not, it's unbelievable," said Blounts cousin, Brittney Blount.
Blount's widow, Lois, was at home when her family arrived to provide support. "It's hurtin'. And it's gonna hurt me even worse when my daughters get here," said Lois. "He loved his children and he loved his grandchildren. And he was close with his sisters and brothers and them too. His nieces and nephews."
Blount's family said one of his friends claimed to be with him at Shaw's. They said the friend told them he went inside after arriving at the restaurant to get food, but when he came back outside, Blount was gone. "He said he walked alongside of the building, calling his name and he didn't answer. He said he didn't go around on the back of the building. That's what he said. And he just left him there," said Lois.
Newschannel 12 went to the home of the man mentioned in the above statement, but there was no answer at the door.
Police said they are investigating Blount's cause of death.
