Boat crashes into Bonner Bridge, becomes partially submerged
A charter boat crashed into the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge Monday morning, causing the vessel to become partially submerged.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the Sandra D, with nine people on board, crashed into one of the bridge's pilings at about 5:45 a.m. Monday. The impact caused a 5-foot by 10-foot hole on the boat.
Coast Guardsmen said they evacuated the nine people on board the boat; three passengers reported minor bumps and bruises. The owner of the boat ran the vessel aground to prevent it from sinking. But the boat did become partially submerged, according to Sandy Sanderson of Dare County Emergency Management.
The Bonner Bridge did not suffer structural damage and remained open after the crash, according to the Coast Guard. The Department of Transportation will inspect the bridge.
The 58-foot Sandra D is based at Pirate's Cove Marina in Manteo.
