"Bicycle Man" dies, gave bikes to kids
The Fayetteville man who helped make Christmas a little brighter for underprivileged children has died.
Moses Mathis, known as "The Bicycle Man," died at his home Monday. He was 76. Carolyn Davis said her brother-in-law died in his sleep around 5 a.m.
Mathis had been battling health problems for months and had been confined to medical facilities. He recently returned home under hospice care.
Mathis spent 22 years collecting bicycles from the community and then fixing them up to distribute at Christmas to children whose families could not afford them. At one point, Fayetteville police had to advise people to plan their trip ahead of time because of the crowds expected to show up at Mathis' warehouse.
Ann Mathis has said her husband's charity would continue.
