It's a conversation Amber Patsky thought she would never have to have with her 7-year-old son. “He said mom, I just don't want cancer to take you,” said Amber Patsky.
Amber, a single mom, lost her job when Pollock Street Deli closed in downtown New Bern. Just a few months later, the non-smoker was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.
Amber has had more than six surgeries and is taking a lot of medication, treatments that cost her thousands of dollars a month. That financial burden has taken time away from her son.
To help with some of that burden, one of her former customers from Pollock Street Deli and some musicians who have been in Amber's shoes due to their own medical condtions, are hosting a benefit concert and pig picking this Saturday.
That former customer, Les Wetherington, was diagnosed with skin cancer. Musician Pete Huttlinger suffered a massive stroke and heart failure. Pete had the same benefit for him, and now he’s paying it forward.
