Police identify man found dead in Greenville apartment

GREENVILLE, PITT COUNTY - Editor's note: The following details are graphic.

The cause of death has been released for an ECU grad found dead inside his Greenville apartment over the summer.

According to an autopsy report from the ECU Brody School of Medicine, 47-year-old Geoffrey Kenan died of "asphyxia due to airway obstruction by gag." Asphyxia is defined as a lack of oxygen in the body that results in unconsciousness and death.

Greenville Police said they received a report of suspicious activity at 3230-F Mosley Drive at about 3:24 a.m. on June 11. When officers arrived, they discovered Kenan's body. At last check, police were calling the case a homicide investigation. But no arrest has been made.

The autopsy report indicated that Kenan was found face down on the floor with a gag in his mouth. He was declared dead at the scene.

During the autopsy, it was discovered that the gag wrapped around Kenan's head extended deeply into his mouth and oropharynx, the report stated. The victim also suffered lacerations to the right forehead and bleeding of the neck muscles.

According to a 911 call, a robbery led to the victim's death:

Caller: "The man needs help like [sic] as soon as possible."

911: "Okay, let me ask you this, you said you know the people that [sic] robbed him?"

Caller: "No, I don't know them."

911: "Because they tried to rob you, correct?"

Caller: "They did."

Friends told NewsChannel 12 that Kenan was a motivational speaker who graduated from ECU.

"He was a very kind person, and I don't know anyone who would want to do any harm to him or anything of that nature," said Leon Holland, Kenan's fraternity brother.

Kenan was wheelchair bound from a prior vehicle accident, and told a caretaker that he did not need her to come to his apartment on the day he was found dead.
