MARTIN COUNTY - Authorities have identified the man who was killed Monday in an accident at a pulp mill on the Washington-Martin County line.
Martin County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Drew Robinson said Tuesday that Lloyd Greene, 56, of Old Town, Fla., was killed in the accident, which happened at about noon Monday at the Domtar pulp mill on NC 149 near Plymouth.
According to Neal O'Briant with the Department of Labor, a hydraulic line behind Greene became pressurized and burst. Officials believe the pipe then struck Greene, killing him, O'Briant said.
In addition to the man killed, Robinson said Randy Hail Woolard, of Washington, N.C., was seriously injured. Woolard was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
O'Briant said both victims were employed by CBT Services, Inc., a major maintenance outage contractor based in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The Occupational Safety & Health Administration was informed about the accident and state inspectors are investigating, officials said.
The Domtar pulp mill was undergoing its annual maintenance outage, meaning the entire plant was shut down for the week, said Domtar spokesperson Stefan Nowicki. The plant has 451 full-time employees.
According to Domtar's website, the pulp mill first opened in 1937. It became a part of Domtar in 2007. The facility has an annual pulp production capacity of 444,000 tons.
