Amber alert victim: "I'm glad to be home."

NEWPORT - A 12-year-old girl who deputies said was abducted and taken from North Carolina to Florida by a convicted sex offender is back home in Carteret County.

Abigaile Lefevers returned home about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to her father Robert Lefevers. Lefevers said his daughter flown from Florida to the airport in Beaufort and was then brought home by Carteret County deputies.

News Channel 12 sat down with Lefevers Wednesday for the first time since his daughter returned home.

"I got to kiss her goodnight and I got to kiss her good morning, which is the best feeling you can have," Lefevers said.

Deputies say convicted sex offender Timothy Newman, 38, abducted Abigaile last Monday. They were found two days later near Miami, Florida. Now that Abigaile is home, Lefevers said the family is focused on getting back to normal.

"It's going to be a long way to get her back to being a 12-year-old," Lefevers said.

News Channel 12 did not talk with Abigaile on camera because law enforcement officials requested that Abigaile not be interviewed while a case is being built in this investigation. But our reporter was able to meet her at the family's home Wednesday.

Abigaile said she is "glad to be home" and looking forward to getting back to school.

Her father said he expects Abigaile to return to school sometime next week. He is working with school counselors to help her with the adjustment.

Newman is expected to be extradited to North Carolina in the next 10 days. He is charged with felony child abduction, identity theft, larceny and unauthorized use of a vehicle in NC. In Florida, he is charged with grand theft auto. Newman also faces a federal charge of enticing a child across state lines.

Robert Lefevers said he hopes the trip with his daughter is Newman's last.

"I'll be there to make sure he gets everything that he can possibly get."

Robert Lefevers reported to the Department of Social Services Wednesday morning for a drug test. Further details are not being released on the department's investigation of Lefevers.
